Working with kids: thoughts from our community

Real mums share their thoughts on how working from home has changed their lives in a challenging but rewarding way.

What's the best advice you can give to other work-from-home mums?

Be transparent with your family. For example, I work because I enjoy it, not just to pay for the kids to have what they want, but because it's who I am, I'm proud of that and I don't need to apologise.

Have everything under a schedule. Organise yourself to know what your working hours are and what time you need to cook or take care of the rest. Having as much as you can done outside work hours really helps me focus during my work schedule.

To have a bluetooth headset, this way you can be fully involved in the meetings and move around the house to fulfil the kids needs. I love multitasking, so I feel like a reliable bluetooth headset makes a huge difference in my routine.

I recommend that while the baby naps, try focusing on work and try to not get distracted by wanting to do the dishes or any other household-task that needs to be done. Only focus on your work. And also let your colleagues know when you are available and when you're not.

If you don't find it a problem to work in the evenings, you can do that instead. But otherwise try closing the "home office" door so you don't have the feeling your work is "still there" when you are actually done with work. I used to have trouble with that, I felt like I was never done with work or the household. You really shouldn't do both at the same time even though that looked convenient at some point.

Don't put too much pressure on yourself and take care of yourself. You are no use to anyone if your are worn out.

What's the best thing about being a work-from-home mum?

I can have it all. I can work because I enjoy it but I also get to be Mum. I wouldn't be able to work full-time if it meant missing out because I had to be in an office all day. I'm the daughter of a working mum who missed out on everything purely because of timing.

I'm fortunate that I'm a mum during a time when remote, flexible working is at the forefront so I don't have to choose. I can have it all.

Kate, 35 years, UK

The best thing about working from home is that I don't miss out on my kid growing up as much as I do when I'm in the office. I also love that I don't have to waste time driving through the city to pick her up, or send her to daycare when she’s sick.

I love that there's less pressure in the mornings. I don't have to get ready in a hurry, so we can start the day a lot more relaxed and even spend some family time.

Marcela, 36 years, USA

The best thing is that I've been able to see my baby grow up and not miss every little step she takes. That's worth everything.

The best thing about being a work from home mum: being present, in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening. The flexibility of not having to miss out.
